State pensioners aged 80 and over are set to receive a bonus of £300 from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) through the Winter Fuel Payment. The payments range from £100 to £300 for the 2026/27 season.
Eligibility for the £300 Payment
For the 2026 to 2027 period, the DWP has confirmed that older pensioners born before September 28, 1946 (those aged 80 or over) who live alone will receive a Winter Fuel Payment of £300. The exact amount depends on circumstances during the qualifying week of September 15-21, 2025. Payments for couples are typically split; for example, each partner in a couple both under 80 would receive £100.
Payment Timeline
Eligible individuals should expect a letter in October or November detailing their payment amount. The winter 2025/26 payment is scheduled for disbursement around the second half of November.
Policy Changes and Controversy
Originally introduced in 1997, the Winter Fuel Payment was automatically available to everyone of state pension age or older. However, in July 2024, the government announced that from winter 2024/25, only those receiving Pension Credit or equivalent means-tested benefits would qualify. This change drew widespread criticism, with activist groups and unions pursuing legal challenges and calling for its reversal.
New figures released by the DWP in September showed that the number of recipients last winter dropped to just 1.3 million, down from 10.6 million the previous year.
U-turn and Repayment Rules
Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a U-turn in June 2025, with certain limits. She confirmed that from winter 2025/26 onwards, all pensioners would receive the Winter Fuel Payment. However, those with taxable income over £35,000 will have to repay it. In a household where only one person earns over £35,000, that individual must repay their share. Approximately 9 million pensioners are expected to receive the payment this winter.
