89% of Brits Unaware of Energy Bill Spend Allocation

New research has revealed that nearly nine in 10 British adults have no idea how their energy bill is broken down, with a staggering 89% unable to correctly identify where their money goes. The study, conducted by the energy switching service Uswitch, highlights a significant lack of consumer understanding about energy costs, particularly the standing charge.

Standing Charge Confusion

The standing charge is a fixed daily fee that covers the cost of connecting to the energy grid, maintenance of pipes and wires, and other infrastructure costs. Despite being a standard part of every energy bill, 75% of Brits are unaware of what the standing charge actually pays for. According to Uswitch, the average standing charge is around 45p per day for electricity and 27p per day for gas, totaling approximately £262.80 per year for a typical dual-fuel customer.

The research found that many consumers mistakenly believe the standing charge covers the cost of their actual energy usage or is simply an additional profit margin for suppliers. In reality, the standing charge is regulated and covers essential grid costs that ensure households have access to energy when they need it.

Lack of Tariff Comparison

Uswitch also found that 42% of British adults have never switched energy tariffs, with many citing confusion over the different charges as a key reason. Of those who have switched, 34% said they found the process difficult due to the complexity of tariffs and the standing charge. Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch, commented: “It’s concerning that so many people don’t understand the basic components of their energy bill. This lack of knowledge can lead to people overpaying or sticking with a tariff that doesn’t suit their needs.”

Impact on Household Budgets

The lack of awareness comes at a time when energy bills are a major concern for households across the UK. With the energy price cap set at £1,971 per year for a typical dual-fuel household, many families are struggling to manage their finances. The research indicates that a clearer breakdown of charges could help consumers make more informed decisions about their energy usage and potential savings.

Uswitch recommends that consumers review their energy bills regularly and compare tariffs at least once a year. The switching service also suggests that suppliers should provide clearer information about standing charges and other costs to help customers understand what they are paying for.

Government and Industry Response

The findings have prompted calls for greater transparency from energy suppliers. A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said: “We are committed to ensuring that consumers have access to clear and simple information about their energy bills. We are working with Ofgem and suppliers to improve bill transparency and help households make informed choices.”

Ofgem, the energy regulator, has also introduced new rules requiring suppliers to provide a clearer breakdown of charges on bills. However, the Uswitch research suggests that more needs to be done to educate consumers about energy costs.
