Coalville Library to Undergo Major £150,000 Refurbishment During Seven-Week Closure
A significant modernisation project is poised to transform Coalville Library, with the facility scheduled to close for seven weeks starting Monday, January 26. The ambitious £150,000 refurbishment aims to enhance the popular community hub, which attracts over 65,000 annual visits and serves as a vital venue for local groups.
Funding and Project Details
The comprehensive upgrade is fully financed through Section 106 planning contributions, derived from new developments in the area. This strategic use of funds ensures the library can undergo substantial improvements without additional public expenditure. Key enhancements include a redesigned entrance layout, new shelving to expand book availability, and fresh carpeting throughout the premises.
Focus on Children and Community Feedback
A cornerstone of the project is a major upgrade to the children's area, incorporating new sensory features designed to engage young visitors. Councillor Kevin Crook, cabinet member for libraries, emphasised the project's community-driven approach: "Importantly, we've listened to feedback from library users to shape what we're doing. What they think and want has been helpful, and I want to thank them for their input."
He added, "This is an exciting project and opportunity to upgrade a popular and well-used public space. It's a chance for us to ensure the library can effectively support new library users and make the space even better for current library users, children and community groups."
Impact and Future Prospects
The refurbishment is expected to bolster the library's role as a community cornerstone, improving accessibility and functionality for all users. By leveraging Section 106 contributions, the council demonstrates a commitment to reinvesting local development gains into public amenities. The temporary closure, while necessary, promises long-term benefits, including an enriched environment for learning, social interaction, and community engagement in Coalville.
