Hertford Mayor Calls for Nominations to Honour Community Heroes
The Mayor of Hertford, Councillor Steven Watson, has officially launched the Community Awards 2026, urging residents to put forward nominations for individuals and organisations that make a significant impact in the town. This initiative aims to celebrate the unsung heroes who contribute to Hertford's vibrant community spirit through various efforts and activities.
Award Categories and Criteria
Nominations are now open across three distinct categories, each designed to recognise different aspects of community contribution:
- The Mayor’s Community Award: This category honours those who foster unity in Hertford by organising community events, sports activities, or youth clubs. It also recognises volunteers in any capacity and individuals who enhance the town's appearance or atmosphere in a positive manner.
- The Mayor’s Nature and Environment Award: This award is for people or groups promoting or implementing local environmentally sustainable schemes. Eligible activities include litter picking, hedge laying, river cleaning, planting, recycling, reusing materials, and building bug hotels. It also covers efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, increase biodiversity, or support local nature and wildlife.
- The Mayor’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Award: This category celebrates those who embody the 'Spirit of Hertford' by highlighting the town's unique historical heritage through arts, culture, music, or sport. It aims to acknowledge contributions that preserve and promote Hertford's cultural identity.
Nomination Process and Deadline
Residents can submit nominations online or collect a nomination form from the Town & Tourist Information Centre located on The Wash in Hertford town centre. Each nomination must include a short paragraph explaining why the candidate deserves recognition in one, two, or all three categories. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
