A long-time dog trainer is urging families to think carefully before bringing a new puppy home this summer, sharing a poignant anonymous poem that captures the all-too-common story of a dog abandoned after the initial excitement fades.
The Poem That Says It All
The poem, titled 'Do I Go Home Today?', is written from the perspective of a dog who was once cherished but later surrendered to a shelter. It describes the joyful first days: being cradled, cuddled, played with, and showered with toys. The dog recalls walks several times a day and children fighting to hold the lead.
But the tone shifts as the dog recounts being scolded for chewing shoes and rugs, being banished to the backyard, and eventually being brought to a shelter. The poem ends with the dog hearing it has only one day left, asking, 'Do I go home today?'
Vic Barlow's Advice
Vic Barlow, a dog trainer with 32 years of experience, says he discovered the poem years ago and believes it is the best way to make families think carefully before adopting. 'I don't want to kill anyone's enthusiasm for having a dog, neither do I want to see the frustration of a family that have lost the desire for cleaning up all over the place or jumping up all over the furniture,' he said.
Barlow has trained more than 4,500 dogs of all shapes, breeds, and sizes. He says working with them has been a privilege and they have taught him as much as he taught them. 'After all this time communicating directly with dogs I can honestly say I have never met a dog I could not help. Owners, however are a little more difficult and need to learn how dogs really communicate. It means getting into the mind of the dog and really understanding. That insight will open a new world to you,' he added.
