Suman Kumari: The Birmingham Businesswoman Behind Handsworth's Beloved Chandni Chowk
As International Women's Month continues to highlight formidable women across the country, one standout figure right here in Birmingham is Suman Kumari. Her journey from India to the heart of Handsworth has spanned nearly three decades, culminating in a thriving business adored by the local community.
A Leap of Faith in 2003
Suman Kumari first made the bold decision to move from India to Birmingham in 2003. At just 21 years old and with two children, she faced significant struggles, working seven days a week to establish herself. Despite being educated only to what we would now consider Year 8 level, she never let this limit her ambitions or deter her from becoming the successful woman she is today.
Chandni Chowk: A Culinary Gem on Soho Road
One of Suman's key ventures is Chandni Chowk, located at 125 Soho Road in Handsworth. The restaurant is renowned for its traditional Indian cuisine, directly inspired by flavors from Delhi and backed by Sukhdev's. A bright white sign with large blue letters welcomes visitors, who are immediately greeted by the fragrant scent of spices and sweets inside, where large black leather chairs provide a comfortable dining experience.
During a recent interview, Suman, with the help of translator Rakesh Soni, the Soho Road Business Improvement District manager, shared her story. She smiled warmly, reflecting on her rise to success and the "difficulties" she has faced along the way.
Overcoming Challenges as a Female Entrepreneur
Suman openly discussed the unique challenges of being a woman in business. She admitted that it is "definitely easier for men" but emphasized that success is "very doable" for women. Her philosophy is that "nothing is hard for her," and she always finds a way around any problem she encounters.
However, she also highlighted the importance of a support network, stating, "Sometimes, even as women, we still need a support network around us, whether it is men or not." Chandni Chowk operates as a family business, with Suman receiving support from her husband and relatives, which has been crucial to her achievements.
Expanding Beyond the Restaurant
Suman's entrepreneurial spirit extends far beyond Chandni Chowk. In addition to running the successful restaurant, she owns a factory in India and a company in London, showcasing her diverse business acumen and global reach.
A Message for the Next Generation
One of the key messages Suman emphasized is her desire for "all children" and the next generation to "develop a skill." She made it clear that whether it's standing by a tandoor making roti or engaging in any other activity, "it's all learning that will take you forward." This advice underscores her belief in practical education and hands-on experience as pathways to success.
Suman Kumari's story is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of community support. From her humble beginnings in India to becoming a cornerstone of Handsworth's business landscape, she continues to inspire with her dedication and entrepreneurial vision.
