A fresh opportunity for men in Swansea to explore group singing has arrived with the launch of a modern choir initiative. The 10-week programme is designed to welcome absolute beginners, with no auditions, no requirement to read music, and no previous singing experience needed. Organisers aim to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that offers a contemporary twist on traditional Welsh voice groups.
Building on Success in Neath
This initiative follows a highly successful run in Neath earlier this year, which saw nearly 30 men take to the stage. The Swansea project seeks to replicate that achievement by fostering an inclusive environment where men can simply walk in, have a go, and become part of something positive. The sessions will support local causes, with funds raised going to the Jacob Crane Foundation and Joseph's Smile.
Session Details and Location
Introductory evenings are scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, and Wednesday, September 9, from 7pm to 9pm, with weekly rehearsals continuing from September 9. All sessions take place at The Choir Hall, Manselton, Swansea, SA5 8PR. Attendance is free, making it easy for anyone curious to try something new.
Rachel Perkins, project musical director, emphasised the importance of evolution: "Male voice choirs are an important part of Welsh culture, but they need to evolve if they are going to attract a new generation. We want to show men that they do not need to be experienced singers or fit a traditional image to take part. They simply need to be willing to come through the door, have a go and become part of something positive."

Alongside the musical benefits, organisers highlight that group singing provides a valuable social outlet for participants. It offers local men a chance to boost their confidence, build lasting friendships, and develop a strong sense of belonging within their community. The project will conclude with a special public concert alongside the Swansea Male Choir during its 80th anniversary year.
