Police Dog Stark Dies: Heroic K9 Survived 20 Machete Blows in 2020 Attack
Tributes to 'fearless' police dog Stark after short illness

The police community and a heartbroken handler are mourning the loss of a truly courageous German Shepherd, PD Stark, who died last week following a short illness.

A Career Defined by Fearless Bravery

PD Stark, an eight-year-old German Shepherd, served with West Midlands Police for six remarkable years alongside his devoted handler, PC Paul Hopley. The duo qualified in 2019 and made an immediate impact, locating a car thief hiding in bushes on their very first shift.

However, Stark's immense courage was put to the ultimate test in 2020 during a burglary incident. In a malicious assault, the dog was struck up to 20 times with a rusty machete, sustaining serious head wounds that required extensive treatment.

An Award-Winning Recovery and Legacy

Defying the odds, Stark made a full recovery and returned to duty. Astoundingly, on his first day back, he tracked down a wanted felon who was concealed in undergrowth. His unwavering dedication was formally recognised in 2022 when he received a national bravery award. The honour commemorated an earlier incident where he refused to release a suspect despite being beaten and slashed.

Stark and PC Hopley further advanced their skills, passing a firearms course in 2021. After a career tackling dozens of crimes, the celebrated dog retired earlier this year in a ceremony at the world-famous Crufts dog show.

A Bond That Extended Beyond Duty

In retirement, Stark became a constant companion to Paul and his wife, Michelle, going everywhere with them. His passing has left the couple devastated.

Paul Hopley, who has since retired from the force, paid a moving tribute: "Stark meant the world to both me and Michelle. He was a fantastic police dog who was highly driven, fearless and a protector of everyone."

"It has been an honour being his handler," Hopley continued. "He made me immensely proud every single day and I’m thankful we got to enjoy our retirement together. He will leave a huge paw-shaped hole in our hearts."

The story of PD Stark stands as a powerful testament to the valour, resilience, and profound bond shared between police dogs and their handlers, highlighting the vital role they play in keeping communities safe.
