Chris Tearney, chair of SSAFA Tyne and Wear, presented Harkness with a birthday card from the charity alongside a congratulatory letter from His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Lucy Winskell OBE. The guest of honour also climbed aboard a restored British Army Land Rover, a moment that helped trigger memories of military vehicles from his time in uniform.
