A Solihull mum has introduced a 50p school uniform rail at her pre-loved children's clothing store to assist families facing last-minute wardrobe emergencies before the summer break. Jenny Charman, owner of Kids2Kids Preloved in Shirley, set up the initiative after recognising the frustration parents feel when children rip trousers, stain tops, or outgrow shoes with only weeks left in the school term.
How the 50p rail works
The uniform rail is placed outside the shop on Oxhill Road, offering items for just 50p each, alongside a box of school pumps. Charman plans to keep restocking the rail as more uniform donations come in, encouraging passersby to check regularly. “We've all been there,” she said. “You finally think you've got the kids sorted for school... then, just a few weeks before the summer holidays, they decide to have a huge growth spurt!”
Supporting families amid cost-of-living pressures
The initiative aims to make the final weeks of term easier and cheaper. Charman, a mum of two young children, told the Brummie Mummies Podcast: “Buying school uniform when there's barely any of the school year left feels so frustrating, so we've decided to help! We'll keep topping it up as more uniform comes in, so it's always worth having a little look if you're passing by. You never know what you might find!”
From online to a physical store
Kids2Kids Preloved began as a home-based website before evolving into pop-up shops and finally a permanent store on Oxhill Road. The shop stocks clothes, shoes, fancy dress costumes, and features a games and book corner for families, making it a go-to spot for holiday activities. Charman said: “We want to normalise pre-loved shopping. We think you should be able to go out and buy pre-loved just the way you'd go to your local Primark or supermarket.”
A growing community resource
Charman runs the store with help from friends and family. The 50p uniform rail has been welcomed by local parents seeking affordable options. Follow Kids2Kids Preloved on Facebook and Instagram for updates, or visit the website for more details.
