Thankfully, pro gardener Cynthia from Grow Better Veggies has revealed that the secret to a thriving kitchen herb garden is a little weekly tough love. By performing one satisfyingly brutal task with your fingernails, you can trick your plant into staying sweet, bushy, and productive for months.

Start pinching

"I've talked to loads of people who seem to have trouble with basil," Cynthia explained. "They plant it out in their herb garden or kitchen garden, and find that it never gets very big or bushy."

The fix is simple: you need to walk up to that young plant and mercilessly pinch off its head. No fancy scissors or expensive garden shears are required for this assassination, as the tender growing tip snaps off easily with your thumb and forefinger, reports Katherine McPhillips on the Express.

While decapitating your fresh greenery sounds a bit mean, it completely scrambles the plant's biological clock. It postpones the middle-aged flowering stage entirely, forcing the basil to put all its willpower into growing big, juicy leaves instead of settling down to make seeds.

Kitchen harvest benefits

Because basil is an annual plant, it follows a strict 'live fast, flower, and die' philosophy. By intercepting those flowers, you are essentially giving your herb a regular dose of the fountain of youth, keeping it vibrant and delicious for a good deal longer.

This aggressive approach doesn't just result in larger leaves for your homegrown pasta dishes. It actually panics the stem into producing double the amount of side shoots, turning a sad, leggy supermarket pot into a mini jungle.

Pinch perfection technique

To execute this properly, look closely down the main stem until you find the leaf nodes. These are the little bumps where two leaves branch out directly opposite each other, like a pair of green wings.

Aim just above those leaves and snap the top stem right off. Just make sure you don't damage the side leaves themselves, as these are the exact spots that will mutate into your massive new branches.

Throughout the warmer months, your basil will try to sneakily flower behind your back, so check on it at least once a week to pinch out any hidden buds. If your pot is already covered in flowers, the game is unfortunately over, and it's time to buy a new one and start the bullying process all over again.
