Expert Reveals February Rose Care Secret for Summer Blooms

An expert from the world-renowned David Austin Roses has disclosed a crucial February gardening practice that guarantees longer-lasting blooms all summer. Paul Constantine, a commercial support lead at the company's nursery in Wolverhampton, Shropshire, explained that feeding and mulching roses this month is key to fostering robust plants with abundant flowering later in the year.

Essential Tips for Home Gardeners

Paul shared top tips, refined over 60 years, so home gardeners can replicate the nursery's success. He emphasized that applying a granular slow or controlled-release rose feed now is vital. This should be done simultaneously with mulching, which involves adding a protective layer of high-quality garden compost, composted straw or bark, or well-rotted manure from a local farm.

The mulch must be at least two years old to prevent root burn and should be placed around the base of the rose. This helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide essential nutrients. Ideally, these steps should be implemented between February and early April to ensure plants are well-nourished and can withstand summer heat.

Benefits of Proper Care

Paul stated, "Feeding encourages strong, healthy growth and abundant flowering, while mulching adds a protective layer around the base of the rose, helping to reduce moisture loss, suppress weeds and provide valuable nutrients." He added that roses, like all plants, thrive with steady nourishment, leading to strong roots, lush leaves, and beautiful blooms.

Regular care not only enhances appearance but also builds resilience. Paul likened it to supporting the plants to reach their full potential, ensuring they bloom abundantly throughout the season.

Step-by-Step Guidance

According to Paul, gardeners should first feed the rose and water the surrounding soil, ensuring it is clear of old leaves and weeds. Then, apply a one-to-two-inch layer of chosen mulch around the base, spreading it to the width of the rose canopy.

He also noted that root roses can be planted into April for blooms in their first year, while potted roses can be planted year-round. David Austin Roses, founded in 1961 by visionary breeder David C. H. Austin, continues to lead in rose cultivation with these proven methods.
