A picturesque and colourful new memorial garden has officially opened at Knightthorpe Methodist Church in Loughborough, offering local residents a peaceful place to reflect. The garden, situated in front of the church, was opened by the mayor of Charnwood, councillor Colin Hamilton, alongside mayoress Mrs Emma Lowe.
Dedication and Blessing
Dedicated and blessed by Rev Martin Swan, the special space features a memorial bench donated by the family of Angela Mary Hale, who worshipped at the church until her death in 2015. A large gathering of church members, representatives and local residents came together for the dedication ceremony.
Open Gardens Event
The opening was held alongside an open gardens event, where visitors enjoyed viewing the vibrant flower beds and vegetable plots. The green spaces were created and maintained through a partnership with 'Incredible Edible Loughborough', and were recently visited by judges from 'East Midlands in Bloom'.
Entertainment and Refreshments
Guests were treated to lively entertainment from the Bare Bones Border Morris Dancers, who performed a varied programme of traditional dances to a large crowd in the rear garden. Attendees also enjoyed refreshments including tea, cakes and scones throughout the day.
Community Impact
Church secretary and circuit chaplain, Karen Ette, shared that the garden had long been a dream of her late husband, David. She added that the church council is now pleased to consider requests for remembrance plaques from anyone who has a connection with the church. The garden is expected to serve as a lasting tribute and a serene spot for contemplation in the heart of Loughborough.
