The Mirfield Allotments and Gardens Society will mark a historic milestone this summer with its 110th annual show, continuing a tradition that has been a cornerstone of the local community since 1915.
Event details and admission
Scheduled for Saturday, August 29, the show will take place at the Mirfield Community Centre on Water Royd Lane. Doors open at 1.30pm, and admission is free for all visitors. Attendees can enjoy a wide range of home-grown produce and floral displays from across the region, alongside homemade refreshments including tea, coffee, sandwiches, cakes, and buns.
The event will conclude at 4pm with a presentation ceremony where cash prizes are awarded to the winning growers. This tradition has been held annually for over a century, with only a single cancellation during the 2020 Covid period.
Entry categories and volunteering
Amanda Wigglesworth, the event’s co-ordinator, highlighted the significance of the day: “This is the most important day in our annual calendar. All are welcome to enter any of the categories on the day, except the members’ classes, from 8am until 11.30am, for a small charge of only 20p per entry.”
She also acknowledged the efforts behind the scenes: “The event cannot be staged without all the volunteers from inside and outside the Allotment Society who continue to give so much of their valuable time.”
Community support and sponsors
The society operates across three local sites—Lowlands, Nab Lane, and Bankfield—supporting nearly 300 active allotments. The show is supported by several local businesses, including Newgate Garage, Transmec UK, Fantastic Media, Mirfield Auto Spares, Emerging Futures, Kirklees in Recovery, Tivoli Travel, and Mirfield Podiatry. Tim Swann Graphics supplied banners displayed around Mirfield, and Haigh’s Farm Shop provided sandwich fillers, pork pies, Yorkshire slab, and more.
