New Inclusive Playground Opens at Stratford-upon-Avon Rec

Stratford-upon-Avon Recreation Ground Transforms with New Inclusive Play Area

Stratford-upon-Avon Recreation Ground, affectionately known as the Rec, is undergoing a significant transformation that will soon welcome families with a brand-new, fully accessible playground. The redevelopment promises to create an exciting forest of adventure where children of all ages and abilities can play together.

Four Distinct Play Zones with Accessible Features

The playground has been thoughtfully divided into four distinct areas, each designed with inclusive features and sensory play elements. Every section incorporates accessible equipment to ensure no child is left out of the fun.

  • Sand Play Area: Features a large sand pit complete with diggers, a climbing frame, slide, and 3D wet-pour play animals that provide tactile stimulation.
  • Junior Play Area: Includes a rope space net for scrambling, seesaw, swings suitable for all ages, two spinners, and a standout 'hangout tree' climbing tower with slide and hideaway section.
  • Younger Play Area: Designed for smaller children with two climbing frames and slides, one shaped like a deer, plus a puzzle station for cognitive development.
  • Water Play Area: Boasts a paddling pool and multiple water play stations that will operate daily from May through September, weather permitting.

The entire space has been enhanced with additional shaded seating areas perfect for picnics and relaxation, creating a comfortable environment for families to spend extended periods outdoors.

Community Excitement and Accessibility Focus

A spokesperson for Stratford-upon-Avon District Council expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating: "The wait is nearly over! We've been hard at work transforming the much-loved Recreation Ground Play Area into an exciting new forest of adventure, filled with fresh challenges and a more inclusive, accessible design for everyone to enjoy."

Parents have already begun sharing their excitement on social media platforms, with one commenting: "We need to try this place!" while another noted: "Definitely for a summer's day out." Particularly noteworthy was feedback from a mother planning to travel from Malvern specifically because the accessible equipment would accommodate her daughter with cerebral palsy.

Opening Timeline and Additional Amenities

The existing playground closed on January 12th to allow for comprehensive improvements to both the sandpit and paddling pool, along with the installation of numerous new features. While an exact launch date hasn't been announced, council officials confirm they remain on track for an Easter opening despite challenging weather conditions during construction.

The Recreation Ground offers far more than just the playground itself. As the traditional base for the Shakespeare Marathon and Stratford River Festival, the expansive green space provides ample room for children to run freely. Additional amenities include Stratford Minigolf, two football pitches, public toilets, and outdoor gym equipment featuring a seated chest press, cross country skier, seated leg press, arm pedal cycle, bicycle, and pull down challenger.

The picturesque setting also hosts Avon Bowling Club and a charming bandstand, making it an ideal location for family picnics and leisurely afternoons. Located at Swans Nest Lane, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 7LS, the recreation ground includes convenient parking facilities and is easily accessible from Birmingham via approximately an hour's drive or a 50-minute direct train journey from Birmingham Moor Street station.
