Sophie Harris, senior lifestyle reporter, shares her enduring love for Aynho, a village on the Northamptonshire-Oxfordshire border that remains blissfully free of tourist crowds. Just an hour from Birmingham, this hidden treasure offers stone cottages, Georgian properties, and a remarkable historic estate that keeps her returning time and again.
Exploring Aynho's Tranquil Streets
The best way to experience Aynho is by wandering its quiet lanes. The village is considered one of Northamptonshire's most attractive, with its mix of stone cottages and Georgian architecture. Several circular walks traverse the village and surrounding countryside, all on flat terrain, making for an easy ramble. St Michael's Church, with its late medieval tower that survived an 18th-century reconstruction, stands as a key landmark at the village's heart.
RH England at Aynho Park
Visitors should not miss RH England at Aynho Park, set within a stunning Grade I-listed country house. More than a furniture showroom, it offers beautifully styled rooms, landscaped gardens, and multiple dining venues including the Orangery, Conservatory, Loggia, Wine Lounge, and Juicery. The estate has hosted many well-known figures in the past, adding to its allure. The Loggia serves wood-fired pizzas with wines, while the Juicery offers fresh organic juices and specialty coffees. Harris particularly recommends the Orangery and Conservatory for their rotisserie chicken sandwich, which she calls the finest she has ever tasted, though she notes dining there is a treat due to the cost.
Local Food and Drink
For classic pub fare, the Great Western Arms is a canalside pub in Aynho offering cask ales and hotel rooms. Nearby, Wykham Park Farm Shop stocks locally sourced produce, including a deli with 50 cheeses and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
Nearby Attractions
Aynho's location makes it an ideal base for exploring the area. Banbury is less than 15 minutes away, Bicester Village offers designer shopping, and history enthusiasts can visit Broughton Castle or the landscaped gardens at Rousham House. The villages of Deddington, Adderbury, and Great Tew are also worth a visit for their picturesque streets, independent cafés, and traditional pubs.
