Travellers Occupy Shard End Country Park in Birmingham

Footage captured today, April 10, 2026, reveals caravans and cars parked at Shard End Country Park in Birmingham, indicating the arrival of a traveller group at this location. This incident marks another unauthorised encampment in the city's parks within recent months, raising concerns among local residents and authorities.

It is currently unknown how long the group is expected to remain at the park, as the situation unfolds. The presence of travellers in public spaces has been a recurring issue in Birmingham, with similar events reported earlier this year.

Recent Incidents in Birmingham Parks

In February, travellers set up an encampment in Swanshurst Park, Billesley, which sparked criticism from local officials. Moseley Councillor Izzy Knowles expressed that the encampment caused fear among families, particularly as it was located near a children's playground.

Cllr Knowles stated, "I've received reports that a traveller group have moved onto the car park of Swanshurst Park next to the children's playground, after being evicted from Billesley Common. This is not a suitable place for an encampment and has caused local families to be fearful of taking their children to play during half term holiday."

Council Response and Policy

Birmingham City Council has reiterated its commitment to protecting public land and addressing unauthorised encampments. The council provides transit sites and plots for the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller community, in alignment with Government policy.

A council spokesperson said, "Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it. The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy – and details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website."

As the situation at Shard End Country Park develops, residents are advised to stay informed through official channels. The council continues to monitor the encampment and will take appropriate action as needed to ensure public safety and land management.
