Pihlaja, a former Labour councillor candidate for Moseley, praised Birmingham's size, diversity, and walkability. He humorously noted that he would trade 25 Oreo flavours for three if it meant he could still walk to a supermarket. The city's layout allows him to run errands on foot, a stark contrast to the car-dependent lifestyle in many US cities.
Comparing US and UK Lifestyles
While he misses Mexican food from America, Pihlaja emphasised that the real threat preventing his return is healthcare. He explained that people in Birmingham appreciate time off more and value families, unlike America's focus on financial success. This cultural difference has made him feel more at home in the UK.
No Plans to Return
Pihlaja stated, "I can't see myself going back to the US, the real threat is about getting sick." He values the work-life balance and community spirit in Birmingham, which he believes are superior to the US emphasis on career and wealth. His 12-year tenure in the city has cemented his identity as a Birmingham resident.
