Belper Swimmers Dive In for Diabetes Charity, Smashing Fundraising Target
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Belper Marlin Swimming Club has successfully raised an impressive £4,500 for the Derby Diabetes Fun Club through their annual Mega Swim challenge. The event, held last Sunday, brought together around 80 swimmers, ranging from young children as young as four to teenagers up to 18 years old, all pushing themselves to complete as many lengths as possible within one hour.
Swimming for a Cause Close to Home
This year, the club chose to support Derby Diabetes Fun Club, a self-funded voluntary group that provides fun activities and crucial peer support for children living with type 1 diabetes and their families. The nomination was deeply personal, as two young members of the swimming club benefit directly from the charity's services. The initial fundraising goal was set at £1,000, but donations quickly surged past £1,500 and ultimately exceeded £4,000, with contributions still being accepted online.
Personal Stories Highlight the Charity's Impact
One parent shared her family's journey, explaining how her daughter Amelie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2015, which dramatically altered their lives. She emphasized the invaluable role of Derby Diabetes Fun Club, stating, "The club allowed the little ones to play with other kids with diabetes. They got to make friends but the best part was they could see other kids getting finger pricks and injections. Up to that point she thought she was alone." Another parent echoed this sentiment, noting how the club provided essential support for their son, who is the only child with diabetes at his school.

During the Mega Swim, participants showcased their dedication, with some younger swimmers completing their first lengths without aids, while older athletes covered distances of over 4 kilometers. Nicola Hardy, organizer of Derby Diabetes Fun Club, expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, "It's truly overwhelming the support the club, families and friends have shown. Those donations will make a significant difference to our group."
