Birmingham Dad's Journey from Heroin Addiction to Helping Homeless
Michael McMillan, a Birmingham resident, has transformed his life from a harrowing past of heroin addiction and homelessness to a new purpose helping others in the city. Born in Dundee, he grew up in children's care homes and found himself homeless at just 16 during the 1980s, struggling on the streets of Scotland.
Descent into Addiction and Realisation
During his time on the streets, Michael quickly turned to substances to cope, starting with alcohol and pills before progressing to heroin. He described the environment as reminiscent of the film Trainspotting, with Scotland facing similar challenges at the time. "I was only on heroin for a matter of months, but I could see where my life was heading," he explained. "Watching people around me, I realised I would be dead if I didn't escape." This stark realisation became the turning point in his life.
Path to Recovery and Stability
At 16, Michael moved to London, where he went cold turkey to get clean from heroin. Despite this effort, he spent four years rough sleeping, facing ongoing hardships. His life changed when he moved to Handsworth in Birmingham, where a local family took him in. They provided the stability and security he desperately needed, supporting him over the next decade as he worked through his trauma and fears. "I got stability and security, but I was still a messed-up child," he recalled, highlighting the long journey of healing.
Rebuilding Life and Family Connections
Now living in Bournville with his wife and three sons, Michael has completely rebuilt his life. He has reconnected with his birth mother in Arizona and met his brothers for the first time ten years ago, mending family ties that were once broken. This personal growth has fueled his desire to give back to the community.
Helping Others Through Experience
Today, Michael works as a service manager for SIFA Fireside, a Birmingham-based organisation. He uses his firsthand experiences with addiction and homelessness to help others escape similar situations. His story serves as an inspiration, showing that recovery is possible and that past struggles can be turned into a force for good. Through his work, he provides support and guidance to those facing the challenges he once overcame, making a tangible difference in the lives of Birmingham's vulnerable residents.
