Birmingham Expat in Finland Reveals His Biggest Miss: Football Passion

A Birmingham man who relocated to Finland has opened up about the one "massive" thing he misses most from his hometown. Daniel Bartram, originally from West Heath, made the move to Helsinki in 2023 alongside his ex-partner and their young son.

While the brand manager has settled into life abroad, he admits that certain aspects of home remain irreplaceable. Daniel has not ruled out returning to Birmingham eventually, but plans to wait until his four-year-old son Rudie is older before making any decisions.

Home Comforts Abroad

Daniel has managed to recreate some British traditions in Finland. He is able to cook a traditional Sunday roast and has Yorkshire tea imported to maintain a taste of home. However, he emphasizes that these comforts only go so far in filling the void left by his departure.

Speaking candidly about his experiences, Daniel shared that despite these efforts, there is one love he dearly misses above all else.

The Football Void

"I massively miss the football," Daniel confessed. "I'm a West Bromwich Albion fan and was a season ticket holder for 15 years. I'm Baggies through and through, so to cut off from that... obviously we've had a massive fall from grace recently."

He reminisced about the club's better seasons, recalling memorable signings like Romelu Lukaku on loan and Nicolas Anelka. "Those players we can only dream of now," he added, highlighting the contrast with the team's current situation.

Daniel remains a diehard fan, following the team closely and traveling back for games when possible. He described attending the last Black Country Derby, starting his day at the pub from 9:30 a.m., showcasing his unwavering dedication.

Finnish Football Experience

In an attempt to fill the football-shaped hole, Daniel has attended matches of HJK Helsinki, the local team in Finland. He acknowledged that the atmosphere is enjoyable, particularly because fans are allowed to take beers onto the terraces.

However, he was frank about the comparison: "The standard of football isn't as good as the Championship. It's not great but I don't want to be too harsh." This admission underscores his longing for the higher level of play and passion found in English football.

Priorities and Longing

When asked what he misses most, Daniel was clear: "The Albion and my family are the two things I miss the most." He noted that material items like marmite and tea can be shipped over by his parents, but the emotional connection to football and loved ones cannot be replicated.

Despite this, Daniel continues to make the most of his life in Helsinki, ensuring he has his home comforts, from a proper cup of tea to a Sunday roast. Yet, for this Birmingham expat, the roar of the crowd at The Hawthorns remains a cherished memory that no import can replace.
