Birmingham mum launches Cakey Blinders after FND diagnosis, now home schools and bakes
Birmingham mum's Cakey Blinders turns stress into success

Meet the inspirational Birmingham mum behind Cakey Blinders. Sarah Lewis and her son Henry make incredible birthday cakes. Sarah launched Cakey Blinders in 2025 after being diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) due to stress. Since then, she has turned her life around, now home schooling her son while running her own business.

Turning passion into purpose

“I’ve always loved baking and wanted to turn that passion into something positive for my family,” said Sarah, from Solihull, whose children are 17 and 11. “It began as part of our home education journey, teaching real-life business skills such as budgeting, food safety, customer service, and creativity. Following my diagnosis, the business has also given me the opportunity to work at my own pace with support from my family, while still doing something I genuinely enjoy.”

Creative cakes for every occasion

Sarah says it has been a “dream come true” to see customers’ reactions to her cakes. She has made everything from cakes that look like Oasis concerts and Cliff Richard records to pints of Guinness and LEGO blocks. Her creations include Oasis and Only Fools and Horses themed celebration cakes.

Building skills and confidence

“The business has become part of our home learning, helping teach practical life and business skills in a fun and hands-on way. Running the business from home also gives me flexibility to manage my health while balancing family life,” Sarah added. “I love being creative and seeing people enjoy what I make. I also love that it allows me to spend quality time with my children while teaching them valuable skills and building something together as a family. It’s also given me confidence and purpose after my diagnosis, while allowing me to work in a way that suits my health needs.”
