Bramhall Repair Café's Clock Expert Revives Timepieces for Charity
Nash, a dedicated volunteer for Cancer Research UK and the Stockport Post, accidentally discovered the Bramhall Repair Café at Bramhall Methodist Church. Initially bringing in a few items for attention, he soon found himself offering help with a quartz clock that was draining batteries excessively. This chance encounter reignited his passion for timepiece repair, a skill he honed from his father in India.
A Lifelong Skill Rekindled
After migrating to the United Kingdom, Nash spent weekends assisting at D & P Rainford, a jeweller in Stockport's Stepping Hill area. However, after moving to Bramhall in 1980, the rise of quartz watches led him to step away from repairing them. Last year, following a bout of double vision, he sold all his tools and donated the proceeds to Cancer Research UK, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the cause.
Walking for a Cause
In February, Syd Norbury of SK Auto Sales and Auto Centre approached Nash about two malfunctioning clocks: a Grandfather clock too heavy to transport and a 31-day mantle clock. Syd offered a lift, but Nash, always eager to fundraise, decided to walk the hour-long journey to Poynton. Upon inspection, he found the Grandfather clock simply needed a level surface, while the mantle clock required thorough cleaning and oiling.
Teaching and Repairing
Nash carefully dismantled the clock movements from their casings, showing Syd what needed to be done. Syd, keen to learn, then cleaned the mechanism and oiled the parts himself under Nash's guidance. After a couple of weeks, Syd messaged Nash with positive news, reporting that both clocks were ticking away merrily after their spring clean and oil service.
A Monthly Commitment
Now, Nash can be found at the Bramhall Repair Café every month, generously offering his expertise to anyone with clock or watch issues. As a fervent supporter of Cancer Research UK, he continues to work hard towards his fundraising target, blending his repair skills with charitable efforts to make a meaningful impact in the community.
