British Teen Missing in Romanian Mountains as Search Resumes
Brit Teen Missing in Romania Mountains Search Resumes

Mountain rescue teams in Romania have resumed their search for George Smyth, an 18-year-old British teenager who went missing while hiking in the Bucegi Mountains last November. The University of Bristol student, from Newport, Shropshire, was last seen in the Valea Gigănesti area, where crews are now focusing their efforts under challenging conditions due to heavy snow cover.

Search Conditions and Challenges

Rescuers from Salvamont Brasov reported that certain areas remain buried under snow between two and three metres deep, with some drifts exceeding three metres. Teams have been scanning and digging in locations considered relevant, including spots where snow had accumulated beneath rocks. Despite these efforts, no concrete leads have emerged.

A spokesperson for the rescue service stated: "Unfortunately, no other conclusive hints have emerged at this moment." They added that searches would continue in the coming period, subject to conditions in the mountains. The prolonged winter this year resulted in snow depths far greater than originally expected, making operations substantially more difficult.

Background of the Disappearance

George disappeared while trekking in central Romania in November. At the time, Salvamont Brasov confirmed that search efforts were hampered by severe weather and snow accumulation up to three metres deep. In December, rescuer Sebastian Marinescu noted that George's last known location was in a "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area."

Family's Response

By January, George's family revealed they had been forced to accept his death. In a statement, they said: "When the mountains that took him are ready to let go, George will be found, and we will bring him home to say goodbye." The family has expressed gratitude for the ongoing search efforts and hopes that rising temperatures will thaw the snow, allowing teams to access difficult areas.
