From Business Success to DWP Benefits: Paul's Health Crisis
Businessman's health crisis leads to DWP benefits claim

Paul, a successful former headhunter and business owner, experienced a dramatic life transformation following a sudden health crisis in 2012 that ultimately led him to claim Department for Work and Pensions benefits.

A Life-Changing Collapse

The turning point came when Paul collapsed by the side of a lake in Milton Keynes, suffering from what he describes as Sudden Death Syndrome in 2012. He was resuscitated at the scene and immediately transported to hospital for major heart surgery.

During the procedure, surgeons replaced his aortic valve, marking the beginning of a long and challenging recovery journey that would permanently alter his life and career.

Complicated Recovery and Further Health Crises

Paul's recovery path proved difficult from the outset. The surgical wound on his chest failed to heal properly, complicating his initial recovery. His health challenges escalated significantly when he suffered a stroke that left half his body paralysed.

The stroke eliminated all feeling in the left side of my body, Paul revealed to The Mirror, describing the profound physical impact of this secondary health crisis.

Financial Consequences and Benefit Claims

The combination of his health conditions and the subsequent breakdown of his marriage forced Paul to turn to the welfare system for support. He found himself needing to claim Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments (PIP) from the DWP.

Paul adapted his living arrangements, explaining that the house has been modified for me. He managed his finances by paying what he could from his PIP and Universal Credit payments, while maintaining communication with his bank about his circumstances.

When his bank initiated repossession proceedings, Paul sought help from MoneyHelper, who connected him with appropriate support services. He described the service as non-judgemental and credited them with helping him navigate his dire situation.

Reflecting on the assistance he received, Paul noted: After the call I felt more in control, understood my options and what to do next. They are a brilliant service. They've not got an axe to bear, they're just literally there to help.
