Coronation Street actor Daniel Brocklebank has announced the death of his beloved miniature Dachshund, Jean, who he had rescued from an illegal puppy smuggling ring. The 46-year-old, known for playing Billy Mayhew on the ITV soap, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing his gratitude to the veterinary staff who tried to save her.
Vets Unable to Save Jean
In an emotional post, Brocklebank revealed that vets at Animal Trust Vets had done everything they could to save Jean, but sadly she could not continue. He shared a video of himself with Jean nuzzling his face, writing: "My beautiful loving, kind, desperately loyal pup Jean left us today. I’m heartbroken. A huge thanks to the wonderful staff @animaltrustvets for doing everything they could to save her."
Jean was one of three miniature Dachshunds owned by the actor, alongside Colin and Dorris. Colin was also rescued from the same puppy smuggling ring as Jean.
Outpouring of Support from Co-Stars and Fans
Brocklebank later reflected on the future without Jean, saying: "Absolutely gutted that I’ll never get to snuggle up with my complete trio like this again. But so grateful of the time I had with them all together. Hug your pups tight while you’ve got them. X"
His fellow Coronation Street stars and fans were quick to offer their condolences. Tony Maudsley, who plays George Shuttleworth on the soap, wrote: "Beautiful Jean. So sorry Dan." Former co-star Sue Cleaver, who played Eileen Grimshaw, commented: "Love you and I'm so glad I got to see her yesterday."
Fans also sent messages of support, with one writing: "All my love darling, you gave her the best life and i hope that you can find some comfort in the pain knowing how much love you gave her x x." Another added: "Sorry to hear this Daniel. Sending love and sympathy," while a third echoed: "So sorry for the loss of your fur baby - it’s heartbreaking."
Brocklebank's announcement has highlighted the ongoing issue of puppy smuggling, a crime he has been vocal about in the past. His rescue of Jean and Colin from such a ring underscores the importance of adopting rather than buying pets.
