A heartbroken family is demanding justice after their beloved father died from malnutrition when his Universal Credit payments were dramatically reduced, leaving him struggling to afford basic necessities.
Paul, a 57-year-old from Birmingham described as a "much-loved dad," saw his monthly benefits slashed to just £324 after being declared fit for work, despite his family's concerns about his deteriorating mental and physical health.
A Descent Into Despair
Paul's daughter, Stacey, shared the heartbreaking details of her father's final months, revealing how the Department for Work and Pensions' decision pushed him into severe poverty.
"He was getting so little money that he couldn't afford to eat," Stacey explained. "We believe he died from malnutrition because he simply didn't have enough money for food after paying his essential bills."
Failed By The System
The family had repeatedly raised concerns with the DWP about Paul's vulnerable state and his inability to manage his finances properly. Despite their warnings, the benefits reduction proceeded, with devastating consequences.
Stacey described finding her father's body in his flat, surrounded by unopened post and evidence of his desperate financial situation. "There was no food in the house, and we found his bank statements showing he had virtually no money," she recalled.
Seeking Answers and Change
The family has lodged a formal complaint with the DWP and is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Paul's death. They hope their tragedy will prompt changes to how vulnerable people are assessed and supported by the benefits system.
"We want to make sure no other family has to go through what we've been through," Stacey said. "The system failed my dad completely, and we need to understand why someone in his situation wasn't given the proper support."
A DWP spokesperson offered condolences to the family and confirmed they are investigating the circumstances, but for Paul's grieving relatives, any changes will come too late for the father they've lost.
