Former Land Girl Jean Bennett Turns 99 in Melksham

Jean Bennett, a former wartime Land Girl, celebrated her 99th birthday in style at Mavern House Care Home in Melksham. More than 30 family members and friends gathered to mark the occasion.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Born in Trowbridge in 1927, Jean joined the Women's Land Army during the Second World War, replacing male agricultural workers on the front line. She often attended dances with servicemen, sometimes walking home from Melksham to Trowbridge afterwards.

After the war ended in August 1945, Jean was crowned her local Victory Queen. She married Ken Bennett in July 1949, and they raised five children together. Jean later worked as an auxiliary nurse for almost 20 years.

Travel and Resilience

Following her husband's death in 1993, Jean traveled the world independently, taking a themed cruise at age 87 and riding the Orient Express for her 90th birthday. Despite a partial leg amputation in 2020, her family says her positive spirit remains undiminished.

Rosie Hardie, home manager at Mavern House, said: “Jean is an inspiration to everyone who knows her. Her warmth, positivity and incredible life story are truly remarkable.”
