Tributes have poured in for a Gambian family from Leeds after four members, including a seven-month-old baby, lost their lives in a single-vehicle crash on the A38 near Derby on Saturday night. The collision occurred at around 11pm on July 25 near Toyota Island in Willington, when a red Hyundai left the carriageway and struck a tree.
Four occupants died at the scene or shortly after: 36-year-old Abu Camara, his 30-year-old wife, their seven-month-old daughter, and an 18-year-old female relative. They were travelling from Birmingham back to Leeds when the accident happened, according to officials.
Driver Arrested and Bailed
The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man, survived with serious injuries and was taken to hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Victims Identified as Gambian Nationals
The Gambia High Commission in the UK confirmed that the four deceased were Gambian nationals. In a statement, a spokesperson said: 'Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Kingdom, together with the staff of the High Commission, extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families during this difficult time.' Deputy Head of Mission Suntou Touray has spoken with the President of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds to coordinate support for the families.
Community Mourns 'Dedicated Servant'
The Gambian Welfare Society (TGWS) in Leeds posted a tribute on Facebook, describing the tragedy as a devastating blow to the community. The post highlighted Abu Camara's contributions: 'He was a dedicated servant of his community, passionate about supporting a new mosque and mentoring young children at football. He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service.'
The High Commission confirmed that the four individuals were travelling together when the vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. All four occupants sadly lost their lives. The High Commission remains in contact with relevant authorities and affected families, promising further updates as information becomes available.
