Television presenter and property expert Jasmine Harman has opened up about a surprising aspect of life in Spain that continues to challenge her after relocating from the United Kingdom. The 50-year-old star of Channel 4's popular programme A Place in the Sun made the significant move with her family to the Costa del Sol in 2023, seeking an improved lifestyle balance she had long envisioned.
Documenting the Dream Move
Jasmine is currently sharing her family's relocation and renovation journey on the new Channel 4 series, Jasmine's Renovation in the Sun. While the move has presented various challenges, one particular difference from life in Britain has proven especially difficult for her to adapt to, despite the sunny Spanish climate.
The Unexpected Indoor Chill
In a recent social media post, Jasmine shared a video that vividly illustrates her daily struggle. The clip shows her walking through her home's gate with her dog, immediately putting on a jacket upon entering, and then reaching for additional layers including a coat and scarf. She accompanied the footage with a candid caption that has resonated with many expatriates.
"POV It's winter time but you live in Spain. No, really… why is it soooo cold indoors? I literally have to put my coat on when I come inside," Jasmine wrote. "Or go outside in the sun to get warm. I can’t get used to it! Have you experienced this?"
Widespread Recognition from Followers
The presenter's honest revelation prompted an immediate flood of agreement from her audience. One respondent commented: "Me!! Every single day! Its warmer outside than inside, I'm wrapped up like an onion inside." Another shared their similar experience: "The truth…..when I moved to Estepona I couldn’t believe it. Each year I wore more layers and bought more heaters. Yet I could teach yoga outside on the grass all year round!!!"
Family Life and Renovation Challenges
Jasmine lives with her husband, Jon Boast, and their two children, Joy and Albion. The family has been undertaking an ambitious project to transform a dilapidated 1980s villa on Spain's Costa del Sol into their permanent residence. However, the renovation process has not been without its difficulties, including budget constraints and unexpected hurdles.
Previously discussing the property, Jasmine described it as a 'complete wreck' when they first acquired it. She revealed on Instagram: "I told you I'd seen a property that really surprised me, in an unexpected way. So the big surprise was the place was a complete wreck, a renovation project. And I've fallen in love with it. So it's a bit scary, it's very exciting."
She added: "I've never done a renovation project in Spain before. I'm sure it's going to be stressful at times but I hope very much that it will be worth it in the end. I can't tell you too much more right now, honestly I don't want to jinx it, but I will keep you posted."
This honest account from a property expert highlights that even those most familiar with international relocation can encounter unexpected cultural and practical adjustments when making a life-changing move abroad.
