MAFS Australia's Mel Akbay Issues Formal Apology for 'Insensitive' Behavior
Married At First Sight Australia 2026 contestant Mel Akbay has publicly apologized for her behavior and attitude on the reality TV show, specifically addressing her treatment of partner Luke Fourniotis. The formal apology was issued via Instagram, despite the series still airing in Australia and the UK.
Mel's Honest Statement on Social Media
In her Instagram post, Mel wrote: "Over the past few weeks I've watched parts of myself on TV that have been difficult to see. There were moments where I didn't communicate well and came across insensitive. For that, I'm truly sorry to anyone who felt hurt or offended. This experience has been a huge learning curve for me. I'm not perfect. All I can do is acknowledge it and keep growing."
She went on to directly apologize for what she described as "careless" stalking comments made during the show, adding: "I regret it."
Clarifying Mis-Edits and Addressing Luke
The MAFS bride also took the opportunity to clarify several mis-edits from her and Luke's time on the program:
- She did talk to Luke's sisters at their wedding
- Luke did not sleep on the floor with a towel as portrayed
Mel concluded her statement by addressing her lack of romantic feelings for Luke: "Lastly, I'm sorry for not developing romantic feelings for Luke and the experiment didn't go the way we both would've hoped. Luke is a good person and I genuinely wish him the best. I hope people can allow me the space to move forward and show who I really am."
Background and Viewer Reaction
Mel and Luke were partnered for the 2026 season of Married At First Sight Australia, with many viewers criticizing Mel for not giving the farmer a fair chance. The couple ultimately left the experiment at the third commitment ceremony after struggling to communicate and form any romantic connection.
The apology comes amid ongoing viewer discussion about Mel's conduct throughout the season, with social media commentary highlighting what many perceived as dismissive behavior toward her partner.
