Rossendale's Mayor has had a busy summer, attending a range of community events from a school production of "Somewhere in Oz" to the third Rossendale Pride, while also highlighting upcoming charity fundraising efforts.
School Play and Football Match
Just before the long summer holidays, the Mayor and his wife Steve attended a production of "Somewhere in Oz" by pupils at Newchurch St Nicholas Primary School. The play, based on Dorothy's adventures in Oz, featured humorous twists, including Dorothy hailing from Rossendale rather than Kansas. The children performed with enthusiasm and confidence, and the Mayor congratulated the school staff and Cotton Shed Theatre Company for their wonderful performance.
Following the play, the Mayor and Steve accepted an invitation from the Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Noordad Aziz, to attend a friendly match between Accrington Stanley and Blackburn Rovers. Despite the goalless draw, the family atmosphere at the ground was enjoyed by the crowd.
Rossendale Pride and Veterans Museum
On Saturday, July 18, the Mayor attended the third Rossendale Pride event at the Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery, accompanied by guest Sean Serridge. Supported by Spectrum Inclusion, the event continues to grow each year, demonstrating Rossendale's strong community commitment. The Mayor thanked Gaynor Seville for the tour and enjoyed meeting attendees, though he had to leave early for another commitment.
That commitment was a visit to the Veterans Living History Museum in Burnley, which houses a collection of World War I and II memorabilia. Currently located in the Shopping Centre in Burnley, the museum offers a warm welcome from volunteers who take pride in their exhibits and stories.
Charity Fundraising and Community Connections
A key role of the Mayor is raising funds for local charities. During the mayoral year, fundraising events will be held for Rossendale Hospice, the M3 Project, and Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue. A recent Afternoon Tea event at Healey Dell Tea Rooms was held outdoors in sunshine, and the Mayor thanked attendees and donors for their support.
The Mayor and Steve also attended "Connecting Cultures" at Oak Hill Park in Accrington, an event highlighting the importance of collaboration with neighbouring authorities as part of the new Unitary Authority. The event featured community groups and an interactive Luminarium sculpture.
Green Flag Award and Badminton Tournament
On Monday, July 27, the Mayor presented a Green Flag to volunteers Susan and Allan White for their work transforming Rawtenstall Library Gardens/Sparrow Park into an award-winning park. The Mayor also met Britain in Bloom judges, with results expected later in the year.
Finally, the Mayor visited the Adrenaline Centre in Haslingden for a badminton tournament organised by Rossendale's local Badminton Club, as there was no Commonwealth Badminton event. Children representing Commonwealth countries showcased their skills, and the Mayor awarded prizes. He thanked Claire Banfield for the invitation and praised the young participants' confidence and ability.
