A Poignant Social Media Post from a Grieving Son
On Saturday, the 54-year-old football legend posted a touching photograph on social media, showing himself smiling warmly alongside his mother. The image was accompanied by a brief but profoundly heartfelt caption that read, “You’ll always be the boss.” This simple five-word message has resonated deeply with fans and fellow celebrities alike, capturing the immense love and respect Keane held for his mum.
Outpouring of Support from the Football Community
The comments section of Keane's post quickly filled with condolences and expressions of sympathy from numerous high-profile figures in the sports world. Notable names such as David Beckham, Gary Neville, and Robbie Keane each responded by posting love heart emojis to show their solidarity. Former footballer Anton Ferdinand wrote, "Condolences to you and ur family," while Salford City FC added, "Our thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time, Roy."
Public Tributes and Funeral Arrangements
During ITV's coverage of England's friendly match against Uruguay on Friday, presenter Mark Pougatch led tributes to Marie Keane on air. He stated, "Everyone here and all of us at ITV sends our condolences to Roy and his family on the sad passing of his mother Marie. All of our thoughts are with the Keane family this evening."
A detailed death notice published on the Irish website rip.ie provided further information about Marie's life and the upcoming funeral services. The notice revealed that Marie was predeceased by her husband, Maurice (Mossie), who also passed away at age 79 in 2019 after suffering a stroke. She is survived by her five children: Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy, and Pat, along with extended family members.
The funeral arrangements are as follows:
- Visitation will be held at O’Connor Bros. Funeral Home, North Gate Bridge, on Monday, March 30th, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with prayers at 6:45 PM.
- A Requiem Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st, at 11:00 AM in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree.
- Following the service, Marie will be laid to rest at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Marymount Hospice, honoring Marie's memory and the care she received in her final days.
