Sisters Win £250k Postcode Lottery in Rubery Street Celebration
Sisters win life-changing Postcode Lottery prize

Neighbourhood Transformed by Postcode Lottery Windfall

An entire street in Rubery, Worcestershire, is celebrating after eleven neighbours won staggering amounts in the People's Postcode Lottery, with two sisters who live next door to each other among the biggest winners.

The remarkable story began when Wendy O'Neill, 59, prepared to celebrate her sister Paula's £166,666 win, only to discover her husband Geoff had secured £83,333 with his own ticket. The sisters, whose homes are so connected they share a drop-down bar in their fence, couldn't believe their luck.

Life-Changing Money for Family Recovery

The timing of the win couldn't be more significant for Wendy and Geoff's family. Geoff suffered five strokes last year, and the sisters lost their mother Ariel just six months ago at age 86.

"Geoff had five strokes last year. The blood vessels in his brain break and bleed out," Wendy explained. "This, for us, is just amazing and is going to be life changing. We can have the downstairs toilet converted to a shower room. It's huge...huge."

The couple plan extensive home renovations to aid Geoff's recovery, transforming their living space to better accommodate his needs. Wendy, described by her sister as a nurse with "a heart of gold," expressed gratitude for their supportive community, noting "the street is amazing. It's one big family."

Newcomer's Luck and Travel Dreams

In an incredible twist of fate, sister Paula had only been playing the lottery for about six months before her massive win. The mum-of-two, who works for Cats Protection, decided to join because the Postcode Lottery supports her employer.

"I've only been playing for about five or six months," Paula shared. "I work for Cats Protection and Postcode Lottery support us, so I thought we'd give a little back."

Paula and her husband Andrew, known affectionately as Bez, immediately began planning how to use their windfall. Their plans include:

  • Renovating their home
  • Helping their two daughters and granddaughter
  • Purchasing a camper van to travel the North Coast 500
  • Exploring Spain and Portugal
  • Creating a trust fund for their granddaughter

Bez, a Jaguar Land Rover maintenance engineer, added: "We meet friends from Dublin in the Algarve every year. If we can, we'd like to go before Christmas and surprise them."

Street-Wide Celebration and Emotional Dedications

The joy extended throughout the neighbourhood, with several other residents sharing touching stories behind their wins.

Mary Cowley, 61, dedicated her £83,333 win to her late father Anthony Cowley, who passed away aged 86 just three days before she discovered her windfall. "Dad passed away on Sunday, and I found out that I'd won on Wednesday," Mary shared emotionally. "This is from dad. Thanks dad, we did it! He would be absolutely delighted for me."

Remarkably, Mary had only spent £12.25 on tickets after joining during a "first month free" promotion in September. The operating theatre anaesthetic and recovery nurse plans to finally take a holiday after not travelling since before Covid, visit her best friend in Spain, explore New England, and get another Corgi dog.

Another neighbour, Lorna Swain, 55, has her mother to thank for her £83,333 prize after she convinced Lorna to update her postcode to her new address - two years after moving. "I moved here two years ago and mum kept telling me to change the postcode," Lorna explained. "I only did it two months ago, so lucky me!"

The sandwich bar manager plans to treat her mother and sister to a wonderful Christmas and help her two sons, noting that her youngest has already joined the Postcode Lottery since hearing about her win.

Further up the road, Jayne Griffiths, 59, collected her £83,333 cheque with plans to care for her three children and three grandchildren while booking dream holidays to Italy and Gran Canaria. The financial controller also plans a family holiday to Menorca next year to celebrate her 60th birthday.

As champagne corks popped and confetti filled the air, the residents of this extraordinary Worcestershire street celebrated their collective good fortune, proving that sometimes lightning - or in this case, life-changing lottery wins - really can strike twice in the same place.
