Swansea Resident Elsie Davies Celebrates 100th Birthday
A remarkable woman who has called Swansea home for eight decades has just celebrated her 100th birthday, marking a century of life filled with unique experiences and resilience. Elsie Davies, originally from Llangunllo in Powys where she was born in 1926, relocated to Swansea around her 20th birthday, establishing deep roots in the community.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Elsie's working life started early at the age of 14, when she took a position on the counters of the Star Supply food store in Llandrindod Wells. She then transitioned to clerical telegraphy, utilizing Morse code until she turned 18, showcasing her adaptability and skill in communication technologies of the era.
Wartime Service and Railway Career
During World War II, Elsie contributed to the war effort by working for the RAF in Shrewsbury, demonstrating her dedication and patriotism. After being demobbed post-war, she secured a job with the London, Midland and Scottish Railways, which later integrated into British Rail. In this role, she performed clerical duties in the offices, ensuring the smooth operation of train services, and remained with the company until her retirement at age 60.
It was during her time in the railway offices that Elsie met her husband, Richard, who sadly passed away approximately 18 years ago. The couple did not have children, but Elsie maintains a close bond with her sister-in-law and has nephews and nieces, though they reside elsewhere.
Later Years and Birthday Celebrations
In October 2021, Elsie moved in with Ian and Dawn Fearn, who now provide care for her. Celebrating her landmark 100th birthday, Elsie enjoyed an afternoon tea with family at a local coffee shop, followed by another gathering at her church, creating cherished memories with loved ones.
Secrets to a Long and Fulfilling Life
When asked about the secret to her impressive age, Elsie attributed it largely to living on a small holding and subsisting off the land, which fostered a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. She emphasized that she has always looked forward in life, though witnessing the passing of others has been a challenging aspect of her journey.
Elsie has consistently been a very independent individual who has always extended help to others. Initially, accepting assistance from Ian and Dawn Fearn was difficult for her, reflecting her strong-willed nature and lifelong commitment to self-reliance.
