An 84-year-old train manager working for West Midlands Railway has said his job is 'what I love doing,' as he continues to work on services across Birmingham and the region. The pensioner, who has been with the railway for over 20 years, shows no signs of retiring, citing his passion for the role and the people he meets.
Long Career on the Railways
The train manager, whose name has not been disclosed, began his railway career later in life after retiring from a previous job. He joined West Midlands Railway and has worked on routes including Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, and Shrewsbury. He typically works several days a week, managing tickets, ensuring passenger safety, and providing assistance.
According to the railway company, he is one of the oldest active train managers in the UK. He said: 'I love the job, I love the people, and I love being out and about. It keeps me young.'
Passion for the Role
His dedication has earned him praise from colleagues and passengers alike. A West Midlands Railway spokesperson said: 'He is a fantastic example of how age is no barrier to a fulfilling career. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he is a valued member of our team.'
