American Family Chooses Torquay After AI Suggests It as Perfect UK Destination

An American family has decided to leave the United States, citing the political climate under Donald Trump's administration as "too much," and is moving to Torquay in Devon after artificial intelligence software ChatGPT recommended it as the best place to live in Britain.

Seeking a Normal Life Away from Political Turmoil

Ashley Anne O'Brien, a 55-year-old contract manager from Cocoa Beach, Florida, explained that her family's American existence had become overwhelming due to recent events. She expressed a desire for her children to "live a normal life" away from the stress and anxiety she felt in the U.S.

"Everything that happened in the past year has been an inundation of events and decisions that overwhelm and stress everyone out," Ashley said, referencing various political controversies. "I want my children to worry about gossip, bad haircuts and sports, not regular active shooter drills in school."

How ChatGPT Narrowed Down the Search

With a British husband keen for their children to connect with their heritage, the family wanted to move to the UK but felt overwhelmed by choice. Ashley turned to ChatGPT for assistance, inputting their specific criteria:

  • A tourist-friendly town
  • Proximity to water
  • Milder climate
  • Amenities including theatre and tennis courts

The AI software generated ten potential relocation spots, predominantly in Devon, with Torquay emerging as a standout recommendation alongside Sidmouth and Exmouth.

Falling in Love with Torquay's Charms

Upon researching Torquay, the family was immediately captivated by the seaside town's attractions, including:

  • The beautiful beachfront
  • Kents Cavern prehistoric caves
  • Babbacombe Model Village
  • The Babbacombe Cliff Railway

"It's a larger town compared to Sidmouth and Exmouth and they seem to have more amenities due to having more people," Ashley noted, appreciating the practical advantages.

New Life and Business Plans

The family aims to complete their relocation by the end of summer, with hopes of becoming Torquay residents as early as July. Their ambitious plan includes starting a bed and breakfast business in the popular tourist destination.

"The dream is to find a bed and breakfast there where someone is retiring," Ashley shared. "Maybe we could take over the bed and breakfast and my husband can make the full English breakfast and I'll be in the back baking bread, making biscuits and blueberry muffins."

Embracing Community Connections

Already preparing for their new life, Ashley has joined local Facebook groups to understand community concerns and events. "I want to worry about rights of way and litter and children speeding on e-bikes and how long it takes for local permits," she said, describing the ordinary concerns she hopes to have instead of political anxieties.

The family's children, Daisy (13) and Mitchell (15), will have the opportunity to forge stronger connections with their father's roots in Walsall while enjoying what Ashley describes as a "hopeful and beautiful" life in England.
