An extraordinary eleven-year-old from Yeadon has become a local hero after completing a punishing 28-mile trek in full army uniform, raising thousands of pounds for military veterans and his air cadet teammates.
The Young Fundraiser's Mission
Leo Sutcliffe, a dedicated member of 2160 (Yeadon) Squadron Air Training Corps, embarked on his remarkable journey from his hometown to Harrogate and back. Donning full military gear including combat trousers, army boots and a weighted backpack, the determined schoolboy walked through challenging terrain and changing weather conditions to support causes close to his heart.
Inspiring Community Support
The young cadet's incredible effort has captured the imagination of his local community, with donations flooding in to support two vital organisations. Funds raised will be split between the Royal Air Forces Association, which supports serving and former RAF personnel and their families, and Leo's own air cadet squadron.
"I wanted to challenge myself while helping others," Leo explained. "The veterans have done so much for us, and my squadron has given me amazing opportunities. This was my way of saying thank you."
Overcoming the Challenge
The marathon walk tested Leo's physical and mental resilience to the limit. Battling fatigue, blisters and changing weather, he persevered through the gruelling distance with the encouragement of family members who accompanied him along the route.
His determination paid off spectacularly, smashing his original fundraising target of £500 and reaching an impressive £2,800 and counting. The overwhelming response has demonstrated the community's deep appreciation for both the armed forces and this remarkable young citizen.
A Legacy of Support
Leo's inspirational effort continues a family tradition of supporting military causes, following his grandfather's own fundraising walks. The substantial funds raised will provide crucial support to veterans in need while ensuring his fellow cadets can continue enjoying the benefits of the Air Training Corps programme.
