Supermarket Giant Continues Support for Older Shoppers
In a significant move to support older customers through the coldest months, Asda has announced it is extending its popular £1 Winter Warmer meal deal in all of its 212 in-store cafes. The initiative, which has been running since November 1, will now continue until the end of February, offering vital warmth and community to shoppers aged 60 and over.
The deal allows eligible customers to enjoy a choice of tomato or chicken soup served with bread, alongside unlimited tea or coffee, for just one pound. This marks the fourth consecutive year the supermarket has run the scheme, underlining its commitment to tackling pensioner poverty and social isolation.
A Vital Response to the Cost of Living
Asda executives have been clear about the driving force behind the initiative. Jordan Cummings, Buying Manager for Cafes and Concessions, highlighted the ongoing pressures faced by many. "We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income," he stated.
The scheme's impact is demonstrated by impressive uptake figures. Last year, the initiative served half a million £1 meals. Speaking previously, Ian McEvans, Asda’s Commercial Vice President for Fresh and Frozen, revealed that 1.2 million meals had been sold since the launch of Winter Warmers, with 60,000 served in just the first two weeks of a previous season.
More Than a Meal: Combating Loneliness
The offer is designed to provide more than just affordable nutrition; it aims to foster social connection. "By bringing Winter Warmers back, we hope it will continue to be just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most, as well as offering a relaxed social environment to come and chat to others," added Cummings.
To encourage participation, Asda’s network of Community Champions are actively inviting local over-60s groups and individuals to visit their store café. The £1 meal is promoted as an opportunity for social interaction, helping to combat loneliness during a challenging time of year.
With the extension confirmed until the end of February, Asda's Winter Warmers scheme continues to be a key example of corporate social responsibility, directly addressing the dual challenges of financial strain and social isolation among the UK's older population.
