Hundreds of Thousands Miss Out on Savings
Despite the availability of this discount, it is estimated that around 470,000 people aged 75 and over do not claim Pension Credit, which is a prerequisite for the free TV Licence. This underclaiming means that a significant number of retirees are missing out on potential savings, especially as the licence fee is set to increase to £180 starting in April.
Pension Credit serves as a top-up for lower-income pensioners, but many may not apply because they believe the additional amount is too small to be worthwhile. However, claiming this benefit can unlock access to other perks, including the free TV Licence, making it a crucial step for eligible seniors.
Application Process Is Not Automatic
It is important to note that the process for obtaining a free TV Licence is not automatic. Eligible pensioners must actively apply for the discount, which requires them to first claim Pension Credit. This manual step contributes to the high number of individuals who overlook this opportunity.
According to Money Saving Expert, approximately 2.2 million people are eligible for Pension Credit, but an estimated 760,000 do not claim it, often because they are unaware of their entitlement. Since 2020, most over-75s no longer receive free TV Licences automatically, with exceptions only for those claiming Pension Credit, including both Guarantee and Savings credit.
