Maureen Walker, a beloved resident of Moira, will celebrate her 100th birthday on August 22, surrounded by her delighted family. Her family has expressed immense pride in reaching this incredible occasion after a long and vibrant life.
Early Life and War Service
Born in West Yorkshire, Maureen was among the last group of people conscripted towards the end of World War II. Desperate to leave home, she chose to join the ATS rather than work in a local munitions factory. During her service, she met her future husband, Kenneth Walker, who had served in North Africa and Italy.
Marriage and Family Life
After marrying at St. Chad’s Church on April 29, 1950, the couple made their home in Leicester. They raised four daughters: Pamela, Elaine, Beverley, and Wendy. Once her youngest daughter started school, Maureen began working for Grattans, taking early retirement in 1981.
Later Years and Companionship
Following the passing of her husband in 2001, Maureen moved to Moira to be closer to her daughters. She later found companionship with Ray through her local church, and they shared 20 happy years together before he passed away in 2022. Today, Maureen lives independently with the support of her daughters and carers.
A Love for Garden and Irish Music
Maureen retains a deep love for her garden and enjoys spending as much time outside as possible. Although she never managed to visit Ireland, she happily makes up for it by listening to her favourite Irish CDs on repeat.
Centenary Celebration
Alongside her four daughters, Maureen is the proud head of a large family including nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. The family is coming together to host an afternoon tea party to celebrate her massive century milestone.
