State Pensioners Over 80 Could Receive £443 Monthly Increase from April

Older pensioners across the UK might be missing out on hundreds of pounds each month in additional income from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) through a lesser-known benefit called the over-80 pension. This payment is designed to provide financial support to those aged 80 and over who receive only a small basic State Pension.

Significant Payment Rise Expected

The over-80 pension is set to increase from £105.70 to £110.75 per week starting in April, which translates to approximately £443 per month or £5,759 annually. This boost can enhance State Pension income by up to £422.80 monthly for eligible individuals. However, it is important to note that you cannot claim this benefit if you reached State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016.

Eligibility Criteria for the Over-80 Pension

To qualify for the over-80 pension, you must meet specific conditions. You need to be 80 years old or older and either not receive the basic State Pension or receive less than £105.70 per week in the 2025 to 2026 period. Additionally, you must have been resident in the UK for at least 10 years out of a 20-year period, which does not need to be consecutive, and this period must include the day before you turned 80 or any day after.

You must also have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK, the Isle of Man, or Gibraltar on your 80th birthday or the date you submitted your claim, whichever is later. For those living in or moving to a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland, it is advisable to check pensions and benefits for UK nationals in those regions.

How the Benefit Works

Eligibility for the over-80 pension is not based on National Insurance contributions, making it accessible to more individuals. The DWP provides an example to illustrate how the payment functions: if you are 80 years old and receive £43 per week in basic State Pension, your pension could be topped up by £62.70 to reach the weekly amount of £105.70.

This benefit ensures that older pensioners receive adequate financial support, potentially boosting their monthly income significantly. It is crucial for eligible individuals to check their eligibility and apply to avoid missing out on this valuable assistance.
