The Department for Work and Pensions has issued a critical deadline for state pensioners anticipating a Winter Fuel Payment, urging thousands to verify their bank accounts on Wednesday morning.
Key Details for Eligible Pensioners
If you were born before 22 September 1959, you could be entitled to receive between £100 and £300 to assist with heating costs for the winter period of 2025 to 2026. This financial support, known as the Winter Fuel Payment, is typically disbursed automatically without the need for a claim.
Automatic Payment Process
Most eligible individuals should have received a notification letter in October or November 2025, outlining the exact amount they will receive. Payments are generally made automatically in November or December. However, if you have not received either the letter or the funds in your account by 28 January 2026, it is essential to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre promptly.
Eligibility and Claiming Requirements
The amount awarded is determined by your date of birth and personal circumstances during the qualifying week of 15 to 21 September 2025. You do not need to make a claim if you are already receiving any of the following benefits:
- State Pension
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Attendance Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

If you do not receive any of these benefits, you must submit a claim if either of the following conditions applies: you have not previously received a Winter Fuel Payment, or you have deferred your State Pension since your last payment.
