The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a stark warning to around nine million state pensioners across England and Wales to "stay alert" to a sharp rise in bank account scams. The alert coincides with the automatic distribution of the annual Winter Fuel Payment throughout November and December.
Scam Activity Spikes as Payments Land
Pensions Minister Torsten Bell confirmed that payments are currently being made, but warned of a dangerous 150 percent surge in scam activity targeting recipients. Fraudsters are posing as government officials or payment providers in an attempt to steal personal and financial information.
"Payments are being made automatically... so don’t worry if yours hasn’t arrived yet," said Bell. "But do remember to stay alert to scam texts. The Government will never ask you to share personal information or click on links to claim your payment."
How to Identify a Legitimate Payment and Report Fraud
The DWP has provided clear guidance to help pensioners identify their genuine payment and avoid fraud. A legitimate Winter Fuel Payment will appear in bank statements with a reference that begins with the recipient's National Insurance number, followed by 'DWP WFP'.
Anyone who receives a suspicious text message is urged not to engage with it. This includes not clicking on any links. The message should instead be forwarded to the free reporting service on 7726.
Payment Details and Important Tax Information
The amount each pensioner or household receives depends on their specific circumstances, including whether they live as a couple, are entitled to other benefits, or live in a care home.
The DWP also highlighted an important tax note for some recipients. Pensioners with an income over £35,000 who receive the Winter Fuel Payment may need to repay it later. This repayment will happen either automatically through their tax code from April 2026, or via their tax return for the 2025 to 2026 financial year.
With millions of pounds being transferred to vulnerable households during the costly winter months, the DWP's warning underscores the critical need for vigilance. Pensioners are reminded that they will never be asked to provide bank details to receive this automatic payment.
