A former Conservative councillor has admitted to a horrifying 13-year campaign of drugging and sexually abusing his now ex-wife, pleading guilty to nearly fifty separate charges at Winchester Crown Court.
Guilty Pleas Entered in Court
Philip Young, aged 49, stood before the dock on Friday and took twenty-seven minutes to enter his guilty pleas to a catalogue of offences against his former spouse, Joanne Young. The charges spanned the period between 2010 and 2023, revealing a prolonged pattern of abuse.
The former councillor, who previously lived in Swindon but is now of Amberley Road in Enfield, admitted to forty-eight of the fifty-six charges brought against him. His guilty pleas included:
- Fourteen counts of voyeurism
- Eleven counts of rape
- Eleven counts of administering a substance with intent to stupefy
- Seven counts of assault by penetration
- Four counts of sexual assault
- One count of publishing obscene articles
Courtroom Scene and Support
Ms Young, aged 48, who had previously waived her right to anonymity in connection with the case, sat in the courtroom to hear the guilty pleas. She was supported by her sister and a member of the witness support team during the emotionally charged proceedings.
Young pleaded not guilty to eight further charges, including three charges of making indecent images of children alleged to have occurred in July 2024. He also denied one charge of possessing a prohibited image and four charges of possessing an extreme pornographic image between January 2019 and January 2024.
Additional Defendants in Related Case
In a related development, five other men appeared in court on the same day, charged with sexual offences against Ms Young. All five were granted bail and are scheduled to stand trial on October 5th.
The additional defendants include:
- Norman Macksoni, 47, of Wood End Close in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, who pleaded not guilty to one count of rape.
- Richard Wilkins, 61, of Toothill, Swindon, Wiltshire, who pleaded not guilty to one count of rape and one charge of assault by penetration.
- Dean Hamilton, 47, of no fixed abode, who is yet to enter a plea to one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of assault by penetration.
- Connor Sanderson Doyle, 31, of Crofton Road, Swindon, who pleaded not guilty to sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching.
- Mohammed Hassan, 37, of Torun Way in Swindon, who pleaded not guilty to sexual touching.
