Police Investigation Underway

Detective Inspector Jim Mahon, of West Midlands Police, said: "We are in the early stages of our investigation and are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this man's death. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

Officers are conducting house-to-house inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage from the area to piece together the man's movements prior to the incident. The canal towpath has been closed to the public as a precaution, and divers have been deployed to search the water for any potential evidence.

Community Reaction

Local residents expressed shock at the discovery. One nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It's awful to think something like this has happened so close to home. The canal is usually a quiet spot for walkers and cyclists."

Police have urged anyone with information or who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to come forward. Witnesses can contact West Midlands Police via 101 or through the force's website, quoting log number 2195 of 24 September.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course to determine the cause of death, with results expected to inform the direction of the investigation. The coroner has been notified.
