Paedophile jailed 46 years after abusing girl in Birmingham

Michael Wisdom, a 67-year-old paedophile from Birmingham, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison with an additional eight years on licence, nearly five decades after he sexually assaulted a young girl in 1979. The victim bravely reported the incident to West Midlands Police last year, leading to Wisdom's arrest.

Arrest and Evidence

When officers arrived at his home, Wisdom attempted to destroy his mobile phones. However, forensic examination uncovered sick images of children on the devices, along with messages to a woman discussing the abuse of a girl. These findings formed a key part of the prosecution's case.

Conviction and Sentencing

In April 2026, Wisdom was found guilty of sexually assaulting a child and possession of indecent images. On Monday, July 13, 2026, he was jailed for 12 years, with a further eight years on licence after release. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 20 years and placed him on the Sex Offender Register for life.

Police Statement

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "Thanks to the survivors' accounts, we were able to build a case against Wisdom and secure justice for them, with Wisdom being convicted on 27 April. Our specialist Non-Recent RASSO Team within our Public Protection Unit investigates all reports of sex offences, no matter how long ago they took place. You can report a sexual assault or rape that happened at any time to us, even if it was months, years or decades ago. We take every report seriously, no matter how much time has passed. We understand that there are lots of reasons why someone might not feel ready to tell anyone about what has happened right away. We also know it is common for survivors to take time to realise that what has happened is a crime."

Impact and Justice

This case highlights the importance of reporting historical sexual offences. The victim's courage in coming forward after 46 years enabled police to secure a conviction, demonstrating that justice can be served regardless of the passage of time. Wisdom's lengthy sentence and lifelong registration as a sex offender reflect the severity of his crimes.
