Nicola Bulley's Partner Paul Ansell Shares Heartbreaking Family Update Two Years Later
Paul Ansell, the partner of Nicola Bulley, has issued a devastating update on his family's grief two years after her tragic death. Bulley, who was 45 years old, vanished on 27 January 2023 while walking beside the River Wyre in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, shortly after dropping off her two daughters at school.
Her body was discovered in the river on 19 February 2023. An inquest held in June of that year concluded that she had died due to accidental drowning. The extensive search for Bulley, which lasted for weeks, sparked widespread speculation and numerous conspiracy theories online, with some individuals even travelling to Lancashire to assist police investigations.
Media Intrusion and Personal Struggles
Speaking at a lecture held at the London School of Economics on Monday, Paul Ansell recounted the intense media scrutiny he faced in the aftermath of Nicola's disappearance. He described how he was thrust into the public eye, with questions arising about his silence.
"It was the 27th January, 2023, and Nikki left for school with the girls, and never came home. I became a subject with the media, in the sense of, 'where's the partner? Why's he not talking?' sort of thing," he said.
Ansell detailed a moment when he was approached by Sky News, leading to an impromptu interview. He expressed how this exposure led to being psychoanalysed and criticised, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok, which he found deeply intrusive during such a traumatic time.
"It's very, very intrusive, which was a horrible thing to experience on its own, let alone when you're experiencing everything that we were. It can engulf you," he added.
Ongoing Grief and Family Memories
Paul Ansell also opened up about his enduring struggle to accept Nicola's absence. He shared poignant moments where he sees her in their daughters, highlighting the bittersweet nature of these memories.
"I still struggle talking about Nikki in the past tense. I see her in the girls every single day, you know? I see all these little mannerisms, and then I just stop sometimes, and I'm, like, flipping heck," he said.
"That was mummy, you know? And that is worth everything, I think."
Police Response and Public Reaction
During the investigation, police criticised individuals on TikTok for "playing private detectives" in the area, noting they had been inundated with false information, accusations, and rumours. At the time, MPs and campaigners described the release of personal information about Bulley as deeply troubling, adding to the controversy surrounding the case.
This update from Paul Ansell serves as a stark reminder of the human impact behind high-profile cases, emphasising the ongoing pain and challenges faced by families long after the initial events.
