Stepfather Found Guilty of Murdering Five-Month-Old Infant
A man described as being 'full of rage' has been convicted of murdering his five-month-old stepson following a heated argument with his ex-girlfriend. Thomas Morgan, aged 29, now faces a mandatory life sentence for the killing of young Jensen-Lee Dougal, whose life was tragically cut short in March 2024.
Violent Assault Led to Catastrophic Injuries
Swansea Crown Court heard how Morgan violently shook the infant, causing devastating and ultimately fatal injuries. Jensen-Lee suffered catastrophic brain damage, multiple fractures, and extensive retinal bleeding in both eyes. The baby was rushed to hospital but was later taken off life support, dying in his mother's arms.
Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC stated that Morgan had seriously abused the trust placed in him as a stepfather figure. The assault occurred on March 30, 2024, just one day before Jensen-Lee's death. Morgan had been left alone with the baby after an argument with his former partner, Georgia Griffiths, earlier that day.
False Claims and Desperate Emergency Call
While Jensen-Lee's mother, Jordan Dougal, was at work, Morgan called her to report that the baby was choking and had stopped breathing. Emergency services were alerted, and desperate efforts were made to save the infant's life. However, medical examinations revealed the true extent of the violent assault.
During the trial, Morgan denied inflicting the injuries, claiming instead that he had attempted to save Jensen-Lee after the baby fell ill at their family home in Swansea. The jury rejected this account, finding him guilty of murder on Tuesday, February 10.
Police Tribute to Family and Responders
Detective Chief Inspector Lianne Rees of South Wales Police commented on the conviction, acknowledging that while it brings a measure of justice, it cannot alleviate the profound heartbreak endured by Jensen-Lee's family. She paid tribute to the incredible dignity and strength shown by the family throughout the painful legal process.
The detective also thanked the members of the public, first responders, and the investigation team for their efforts in what she described as unimaginable and tragic circumstances. Morgan, of Gorseinon, Swansea, is scheduled to be sentenced on February 25, where he will receive a life term behind bars.
This case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the ultimate betrayal of trust within a family setting. The community and legal authorities continue to support the grieving family as they seek to rebuild their lives after such a profound loss.
