A Stourbridge family is in mourning after their pet cats reportedly died in a devastating fire that destroyed their home on Racecourse Lane on Thursday, August 13. Jo Egan had to be physically restrained from re-entering the burning property, which she shared with her family, as she attempted to rescue their cats, a spokesman for GoFundMe told BirminghamLive.
Desperate Attempt to Save Pets
The spokesman said: "Jo had to be pulled from her burning home after trying to save her two cats during the wildfire that tore through Stourbridge - but the animals could not be saved." The fire spread rapidly from fields behind their properties, forcing Jo and her family to try to douse the flames by carrying water in wheelbarrows.
Jo's mother and stepfather lived next door. Her stepfather was hospitalised with burns to his arm and neck but has since been released. Both homes, which had been lived in for 20 years, have been destroyed beyond repair.
Community Impact and Fundraising Efforts
The two homes were among 19 properties wrecked when the inferno swept rapidly across the nearby golf course. In response, a GoFundMe page has been launched by Hayley Evetts to help the family recover. Writing on the page, Hayley said: "Our friends and their daughter both lost their homes due to the devastating fires in Stourbridge. Not only have they both lost their homes, where they lived next door to each other, but Jo had to be pulled out trying to save her animals but they were lost in the fire."
She added: "They now both have to rebuild their lives as they have lost everything. I am trying to do everything I can to ease the future for them. Please give whatever you can to this beautiful family who always go above and beyond for everyone else." A related fundraiser has also been set up to support the family as they start rebuilding from scratch.
